Abstract
In this study, we reviewed psychological autopsy procedure, methodology, and P.A checklist, and collected a total of 78 suicidal cases using a revised psychological autopsy protocol. Accordingly, we intended to modify the current methodology of psychological autopsy specialized for Korean setting and thus make a scientific rigour. Based on the twelve risk factors (as criteria) obtained from the cases, we attempted to chart a suicidal typology to use for suicide prevention in Korea. As a result, we identified four suicidal types: 1) acute-stress type, 2) chronic-stress type, 3) self-injury and suicidal attempt type, and 4) psychiatric type. First, acute stress type suffered from stress as an abrupt response to environmental/situational event without previously historic problems. Second, chronic-stress type was associated with long-term and chronic problems without specific psychiatric diagnosis. Third, self-injury and suicidal attempt type was related to repeated self-injury and suicidal attempt for getting psychological purposes. Finally, psychiatric stress experienced seriously psychological stress with more than one psychiatric diagnosis. We describe
the details of the four types each and additionally discuss more practical implications with respect to suicidal prevention.
